Authorities in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, have launched an investigation following the discovery of an unidentified body in the Imjin River.

The Paju Police Station reported that the body was found around 9:20 a.m. (South Korean time) on Thursday in the Naepo-ri area of Munsan, Paju City.

The corpse was reportedly in a near-nude state and showed significant signs of decomposition.

No personal belongings or items that could aid in identification were found on or near the body.

Responding to a witness report, police recovered the body and are conducting an examination to determine the individual’s identity.

At present, authorities believe the deceased to be male, though the specific age range has not yet been determined.

Given the location of the discovery, police are considering the possibility that the individual may be a North Korean resident and will pursue their investigation accordingly.

A police spokesperson stated that due to the advanced state of decomposition, it has not yet been able to confirm the identity in detail. It is still uncertain whether the individual is a South Korean citizen or from North Korea.

The spokesperson added that they plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service and conduct a comprehensive investigation.
