North Korea has significantly expanded its capacity to host foreign dignitaries, constructing large-scale accommodations within the Pyongyang Kumsusan Guest House complex. Satellite images captured by Planet Labs on March 26 and reported by NK News on April 3 reveal two newly built seven-story hotel buildings and separate villas inside the compound. The rapid buildout has fueled speculation that Pyongyang may be preparing to host major summits or multilateral diplomatic events.

The Kumsusan Guest House, which serves as a lodging facility for high-ranking foreign visitors, was originally built in 2019 ahead of a state visit by China’s president. Russia’s president stayed at the complex during his 2024 visit, and Belarus’s president reportedly used the same venue during a recent trip.

Each of the two newly constructed hotel buildings is estimated to hold more than 100 rooms, giving North Korea the capacity to accommodate hundreds of foreign guests at once. Construction is believed to have begun in October 2025 and was completed within a few months, suggesting that related diplomatic activity could accelerate this year.

The expansion follows North Korea’s broader push toward international engagement. The country opened the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone last year, and the North Korean leader made his multilateral diplomatic debut at China’s Victory Day celebrations in September 2024.
