The U.S. government has lifted export controls on top-tier artificial intelligence (AI) models, including the Mythos and Claude families. This move is expected to restore regular access to the previously restricted Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 in South Korea.

Anthropic announced on Tuesday via its X (formerly Twitter) account that it has received notification from the U.S. Department of Commerce that export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been lifted. It’ll begin restoring access tomorrow and share updates soon.

Earlier, on June 12, the U.S. government had issued export control guidelines that completely halted foreign access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Both are Anthropic’s top-tier AI models, with Mythos currently offering limited access due to cybersecurity concerns. Fable 5 is a publicly available version of Mythos with added safety features.

On June 26, the U.S. Department of Commerce allowed Claude Mythos 5 to be re-provisioned to a select group of government-approved users. While this eased the previous blanket restriction on foreign access to Mythos, it still applied only to domestic entities, leaving South Korean access limited.

The South Korean government and several domestic companies had joined Project Glasswing, which provides Mythos access, but U.S. government actions had stalled model utilization. Participants included the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and companies like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and SK Telecom.

With the lifting of these export controls, South Korea is expected to regain access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 in the near future.

Anthropic expressed gratitude, stating that it thanks its users for their patience and appreciate everyone who has worked with them to facilitate the redistribution of these models.
