LifestyleChristopher Nolan on AI: Why Action Movies Will Thrive Despite Technology

Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan emphasized in a recent media interview that despite widespread disdain for artificial intelligence (AI), big-budget action films will continue to thrive in the AI era.

The Guardian reports that during an AFP interview in Paris on July 11, Nolan remarked that it’s fascinating that AI, despite being embraced by Wall Street, investors, and tech companies, has faced unprecedented public rejection. It has never seen a technology so widely adopted yet so thoroughly despised by the masses.

Nolan added that it’s quite peculiar. Young people, in particular, have coined the term AI slop to express their contempt. This slang refers to the deluge of AI-generated content – text, images, and videos – that has inundated social media platforms in recent years.

While acknowledging that AI might produce some useful image processing tools, Nolan firmly stated that the notion that AI could wholly replace human creativity is, in his view, utterly preposterous.

Renowned for his minimal use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to enhance cinematic immersion and realism, Nolan, the mastermind behind blockbusters like Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight, is now preparing for the theatrical release of his latest epic, Odyssey, boasting a whopping 250 million USD budget.

In a previous Guardian interview coinciding with the release of Oppenheimer in 2023, Nolan cautioned that while AI could become a potent tool that it must vigilantly prevent executives, employers, and producers from exploiting AI as a means to shirk responsibility for their actions.

As AI advancements become increasingly tangible, a wave of anxiety has swept through Hollywood and the broader film industry. Actors, writers, and camera operators fear potential displacement by AI technologies. In response, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) staged a joint strike in 2023, protesting against AI-driven job losses and infringement of likeness rights.
