The zombie thriller Train to Busan, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, is set for a grand re-release in major countries worldwide to mark its 10th anniversary.
Distributor NEW announced on Monday that this global re-release will feature a 4K remastered version, offering audiences a heightened experience with crystal-clear visuals and immersive sound. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in the Philippines on August 5, North America on August 14, Japan on August 21, and Italy on September 2. Several other countries, including Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Mexico, are in the process of finalizing their release dates.
Train to Busan made history as the first Korean zombie film to surpass 10 million viewers when it premiered domestically on July 20, 2016. The movie kickstarted director Yeon’s distinctive Yeoniverse (Yeon Sang-ho Universe). It garnered international acclaim, securing an invitation to the Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight Screening section and earning praise from Hollywood luminaries such as Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright, and author Stephen King.
In a significant upgrade from its limited 2016 North American release, the film will now screen in over 500 theaters – a tenfold increase. This wide release ensures that North American audiences can fully appreciate the 4K remastered version on the big screen. Adding to the excitement, renowned artist Oliver Barrett, known for his collaborations with global studios like A24, Netflix, and Disney, has designed a special new poster for this re-release.
Train to Busan follows the harrowing journey of train passengers fighting for survival as an unknown virus spreads across South Korea, leaving the city of Busan as their only hope for safety.
