Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Wednesday that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with American nuclear design and engineering firm Sargent & Lundy (S&L) for priority cooperation in developing a Universal Floating Small Modular Reactor (FSMR) standard platform.

Under this agreement, Samsung Heavy Industries and S&L will develop an FSMR standard platform that is not limited to specific reactor types. The aim is to provide versatility for various reactor configurations, offering shipowners and customers flexible options.

The two companies will also collaborate on key stages of FSMR commercialization, including development, regulatory support, construction planning, and offshore deployment strategies, to accelerate the platform’s commercial rollout.

They plan to enhance the technical sophistication of the FSMR to meet evolving international and U.S. regulatory standards. S&L, established in 1891, has been at the forefront of global nuclear project design and engineering for over seven decades.

Kim Kyung-hee, Vice President of Samsung Heavy Industries’ Future Business Division, stated that the partnership with S&L, a leader in global nuclear design and engineering, marks a significant milestone in advancing the FSMR technology. It’s committed to accelerating the development of FSMR technology, the next-generation growth driver, to spearhead the global offshore nuclear market.
