The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following violent incidents during the World Cup final.
ESPN reported on Thursday that FIFA has begun disciplinary procedures regarding assault allegations against Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and coach Roberto Ayala during the 2026 North American World Cup final.
Argentina’s lackluster performance on July 20 resulted in a 0-1 loss to Spain at New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
After failing to secure consecutive championships, the Argentine squad engaged in a brawl with Spanish players.
The situation escalated when Molina clashed with Spain’s Rodri. Paredes struck Spanish players repeatedly, while coach Ayala grabbed and shoved Spain’s Dani Olmo by the neck.
Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi also face charges for unsportsmanlike conduct due to their involvement in the altercation.
They are expected to receive suspensions. FIFA typically imposes a minimum one-match ban for unsportsmanlike behavior and a minimum three-match suspension for violent conduct.
Beyond the players’ violent actions, Argentina may face additional sanctions for unsportsmanlike protests, misconduct, discriminatory behavior, and violations of stadium safety regulations.
Following their semifinal victory over England, Argentine players stirred controversy by unfurling a banner reading Las Malvinas son Argentinas (The Falklands are Argentine).
The Malvinas is Argentina’s name for the Falkland Islands. In 1982, Argentina went to war with the United Kingdom over the Falklands’ sovereignty but ultimately surrendered.
FIFA stated that, in accordance with disciplinary regulations, those charged have been given the opportunity to respond before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee determines the penalties.
