Samsung SDI has revealed that its first commercialization project for solid-state batteries is likely to be for humanoid robots.

During a conference call on Thursday to discuss second-quarter earnings, Jo Han-je, Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing at Samsung SDI, stated that it’s on track to begin mass production of solid-state batteries in the latter half of 2027, as originally planned. Given current customer demand and the ongoing collaborations, it appears highly probable that the initial commercialization project will focus on humanoid applications.

Jo elaborated that it’s currently in advanced discussions with humanoid customers and intend to provide samples for humanoid use in the second half of this year. Following this, it’ll work with the clients on product validation before ramping up for full-scale production. He added that once they’ve established mass production capabilities for humanoid batteries, they plan to expand solid-state battery applications to electric vehicles (EVs) and other sectors.

Samsung SDI projects that demand for humanoid batteries will more than double annually through 2030. This growth is expected to be driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with applications expanding beyond industrial use to commercial and residential markets.
