BMW Group is partnering with the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRTA) at the University of Zagreb in Croatia to revolutionize battery cell production using artificial intelligence (AI).

The automaker announced on Wednesday that it has launched a joint research project called Insight with CRTA to optimize battery cell manufacturing processes.

This initiative aims to implement AI-based predictive models across the entire battery cell value chain, from electrode production to final testing and direct recycling.

The AI models developed through this research are designed to forecast process variables and performance data, significantly boosting production efficiency. The project anticipates cutting material input and processing time by over 50% in battery cell production.

The AI system will also play a crucial role in battery cell quality assurance. By conducting advanced analyses, it may allow manufacturers to bypass parts of the quarantine phase – where cells are typically stored at specific temperatures for set periods before installation – potentially accelerating production speeds.

BMW Group is building a comprehensive battery technology development and mass production ecosystem. This includes operating manufacturing and recycling centers in Parsdorf and Zolling, with its Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) in Munich serving as the hub for these operations.
