The U.S. government is launching a major investment in drone countermeasures as it prepares to host the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup across North America.

CNN reported on Monday that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will allocate 115 million USD for drone technology to ensure security during the World Cup and the celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary of independence.

This budget will be managed by a newly established division within DHS, tasked with rapidly acquiring and deploying drone and counter-drone technologies.

The move comes amid growing pressure to implement additional safeguards against potential drone disruptions during the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico this summer.

Last year, authorities prosecuted a man in Baltimore for flying a drone over the stadium during an National Football League (NFL) playoff game in 2025, highlighting the need for such measures.

With eleven U.S. cities selected as host venues for the 2026 North American World Cup and over a million international visitors expected, security concerns are paramount.

In a related effort, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), operating under DHS, recently allocated 250 million USD to the 11 states hosting World Cup matches for the purchase of drone defense equipment.

This substantial investment in drone countermeasures also serves to address the evolving technological capabilities of drug cartels.

In recent years, cartel organizations have sophisticated their operations, employing drones and cyber attacks to transport narcotics and conduct surveillance on U.S. government officials.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the significance of this initiative in a statement, describing drones as a new frontier in maintaining America’s air superiority.
