Hanwha Defense USA and Hanwha Philly Shipyar have secured a contract with the U.S. Navy, as announced on Monday.

Hanwha Defense USA disclosed on its website that day that it will join the U.S. Navy’s Next Generation Logistics Support Ship (NGLS) program as a subcontractor to Bard Marine US, a ship design firm, in partnership with Hanwha Philly Shipyard.

This marks Hanwha Group’s first U.S. Navy project since establishing Hanwha Defense USA and acquiring Philly Shipyard in December 2024. Following the acquisition, Hanwha Group invested over 200 million USD to boost personnel, capabilities, and production capacity.

Hanwha Defense USA will work alongside Bard Marine US to conduct market research and advance new logistics support ship platform concepts. They will also assess manufacturing feasibility, commercial shipbuilding techniques, and production costs. The contract includes options for functional design planning and specialized studies.

The next-generation logistics support ship will operate on a more compact platform, providing fuel and material resupply, as well as rearmament capabilities, both at sea and ashore.

Tom Anderson, President of Hanwha Defense USA’s shipbuilding division, expressed pride in collaborating on the design and integration of the U.S. Navy’s next-generation logistics support ship. He stated that this contract is a crucial step in leveraging the world-class shipbuilding expertise to deliver vessels that meet the Navy’s requirements for supporting personnel deployed in today’s challenging maritime operational environment.”
