Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced on Monday that it will participate in Gastech 2026, the world’s largest gas exhibition, held in Bangkok, Thailand, until September 17. The company aims to certify its design capabilities for Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) production facilities, accelerating its efforts to secure a competitive edge in the market.
SHI is attending Gastech under the slogan “Charting the Voyage of Energy.”
On September 15, the company plans to receive Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its independently developed natural gas liquefaction system, SENSE, which will be applied to the upper facility of the FLNG. Additionally, SHI will obtain Basic Design Review (BDR) certification from ABS.
On the same day, SHI will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GAS Entec, a domestic offshore plant engineering specialist, for the first licensing commercialization of SENSE.
AiP confirms that new technologies or designs do not have significant technical flaws that violate current classification society regulations and are technically feasible. The BDR evaluates whether the fundamental design specified in the AiP meets classification society standards.
The liquefaction system of LNG facilities is crucial for cooling natural gas to extremely low temperatures, enabling its storage and transportation. Until now, some overseas companies have led the way in related technologies.
SHI has developed and validated SENSE independently, earning recognition for its technological capabilities from global classification societies and clients. This certification will establish a foundation for applying FLNG technology.
SHI will also secure multiple gas vessel technology certifications. On September 15, the Korean Register (KR) will conduct a structural integrity assessment based on Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) techniques for large Type C independent tanks, considering actual operating conditions. On September 16, DNV, the Norwegian classification society, is expected to grant basic certification for composite support structures for ultra-large gas and ammonia carrier storage tanks. Furthermore, SHI will prove its competitiveness across the entire LNG value chain by securing various gas carrier technologies.
The company is also pursuing business collaborations with American firms. On September 15, SHI will sign a technical service agreement (PSA) with U.S. energy company Jera Americas for a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) project off the coast of Hawaii. On September 16, SHI plans to enter into an MOU with U.S. LNG development company Fulcrum LNG to target the global FLNG market across five regions.
Choi Sung-an, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Samsung Heavy Industries, stated that Gastech, the world’s largest gas energy exhibition, is a platform to identify mega trends in the future energy industry. It will expand the collaboration with global companies based on the LNG value chain, including FLNG, to lead the market.
