Etc2028 Olympics in LA: Can a City Known for Cars Go Car-Free?

The Paris Olympics, which highlighted eco-friendliness and low carbon emissions, have successfully concluded. The upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will focus on the theme of the Car-Free Games.

Insider Games reported that “the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics will be a car-free event.”

The Paris Olympics focused on reducing its carbon footprint, targeting 1.58 million tons, which is half the emissions of previous Games. The event featured an air-conditioning-free athlete village and a plant-based diet.

In contrast, its car-free strategy will mark the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Insider Games noted that “LA plans to tackle both environmental sustainability and traffic congestion with its car-free Olympics approach,” presenting a significant challenge for a city where cars and highways are integral to its identity.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the city is actively working to create jobs by expanding its public transportation system to facilitate a no-car Games. She also mentioned that over 3,000 buses would be brought in from surrounding cities during the event. Additionally, she highlighted the use of new technologies unavailable during the 1984 Games, expressing confidence in the city’s preparations for the upcoming event.

LA will implement measures to ensure Olympic-related personnel and local residents use public transportation during the Games and also consider remote work options for employees.

The Olympics will return to Los Angeles for the third time, following earlier Games in 1932 and 1984. The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 14, 2028, and events will run until July 30.
