EtcEngland vs Argentina: Who Will Win the World Cup Semi-Final? Expert Predictions Inside!

Chris Sutton, a soccer analyst for BBC in the UK, has predicted that France and England will face off in the final of the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup in North America. However, artificial intelligence (AI) has picked Argentina, not England, as France’s potential opponent in the final.

On Monday, Sutton revealed his predictions for both semifinal matches of the North American World Cup, stating that England will defeat Argentina 3-1.

Sutton emphasized that this is England’s best opportunity to win a World Cup semifinal. He noted that while Argentina is the defending champion with Lionel Messi still leading the charge, they are merely average compared to historically great teams. He also pointed out that Argentina’s overall strength is weaker than fellow semifinalists France and Spain.

England will face Argentina on July 16 for a spot in the tournament final. If England emerges victorious, it will mark their first World Cup final appearance in 60 years, since hosting the tournament in 1966.

Argentina, aiming for consecutive World Cup titles, has faced tough competition throughout the tournament. They narrowly defeated Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32, Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16, and Switzerland 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinal match, Argentina struggled until Swiss forward Breel Embolo received a red card in the 63rd minute, which turned the tide in their favor.

Sutton commented on Argentina’s fortune in the quarterfinals, stating that Embolo’s ejection completely changed the game’s momentum. He also criticized Argentina’s over-reliance on Messi.

Regarding Messi, who is currently tied for the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals, Sutton expressed cautious concern. He acknowledged Messi’s continued threat but pointed out his age of 39. Sutton believes that if England’s coach Thomas Tuchel can devise an effective defensive strategy to contain Messi’s runs, England has the advantage in all aspects and can secure a victory over Argentina.

England and Argentina share a contentious history, marked by events such as the Falklands War and Diego Maradona’s infamous Hand of God goal. Their World Cup encounters have always been fiercely competitive.

Sutton anticipates another intense match-up, predicting that if Argentina plays aggressively and England maintains composure, the Three Lions should secure a comfortable win. He even suggested that Argentina could be reduced to nine players due to potential red cards for rough fouls.

However, AI’s prediction differs from Sutton’s analysis. The AI forecasts that Argentina will edge out England 2-1, advancing to their second consecutive World Cup final.

Interestingly, both Sutton and the AI agree that France, a strong title contender, will defeat Spain in the other semifinal match on July 15. Sutton predicts a 3-1 victory for France, while the AI forecasts a closer 2-1 win.
