Google DeepMind is partnering with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to develop an artificial intelligence-based hurricane prediction model, as reported by Engadget. Google emphasizes that this AI model can forecast hurricane paths and intensities with accuracy comparable to traditional methods, designed to augment rather than replace human forecasters.

According to DeepMind, their AI model outperforms the existing physics-based model, ENS, by 140 kilometers (approximately 87 miles) in predicting hurricane paths over a five-day period. This precision aligns with the current 3.5-day prediction model, effectively extending forecast accuracy by 36 hours. The AI model also resolves conflicts between path and intensity predictions, potentially offering more precise forecasts than conventional approaches.

To showcase this technology, Google has launched the Weather Lab website. This platform enables users to access real-time and historical hurricane prediction data, allowing them to compare it with physics-based models. However, Google cautions that these predictions are experimental and should not be relied upon as official weather forecasts.

As concerns mount over potential staff reductions at the National Weather Service due to budget cuts under the Trump administration, AI is emerging as a promising alternative in weather forecasting. Industry observers suggest that through this project, Google DeepMind aims to demonstrate AI’s potential for making significant contributions to disaster response and management.
