Doosan Enerbility announced on Friday that it has secured a contract to manufacture key components for sodium-cooled reactors from TerraPower, a leading U.S. advanced nuclear technology company.

Under this agreement, Doosan Enerbility will produce the reactor vessel, reactor support structures, and internal components for TerraPower’s sodium-cooled reactor.

Following a December 2024 contract for manufacturing feasibility review of critical components for TerraPower’s first reactor, Doosan Enerbility has developed and implemented design enhancements to ensure successful production. This effort has elevated the design maturity to a level ready for manufacturing orders.

Years of collaboration have forged a robust partnership, merging TerraPower’s reactor technology and safety standards with Doosan Enerbility’s cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities.

TerraPower’s inaugural nuclear power plant, currently under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming, will feature a 345 MW advanced reactor. This project stands as one of the first next-generation nuclear initiatives to reach commercial-scale construction in the U.S., marking a crucial step towards the commercialization of advanced reactor technology.

Backed by the U.S. government’s policy to expand advanced nuclear power, the project received construction approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and is scheduled to break ground in spring 2026. The components supplied by Doosan Enerbility are expected to play a vital role in the timely construction and commercial operation of TerraPower’s first reactor.

Kim Jong-Doo, President of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group, stated that this manufacturing contract is the result of years of close cooperation and trust built with TerraPower. It’s committed to executing the project flawlessly while continuously enhancing the small modular reactor (SMR) manufacturing capabilities and expanding our role as a global supplier.

TerraPower is an industry leader in nuclear energy, specializing in the design of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). These fourth-generation reactors use liquid sodium as a coolant to transfer heat generated during nuclear fission and employ fast neutrons for fission without a moderator.

The reactor’s design, coupled with a molten salt energy storage system, allows for efficient heat storage and transfer, potentially boosting power output to 500 MW. Beyond the initial reactor, TerraPower has secured contracts for future SMR deployments and is actively pursuing additional projects both in the U.S. and internationally.

In related news, Doosan Enerbility reported a second-quarter order backlog of 26.35 trillion KRW (about 18.6 billion USD), representing an 8.7% increase from the previous quarter.
