Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Alcedis, a data-driven digital clinical trial company, to utilize biometric data collected from Galaxy Watches in new drug development clinical trials. This collaboration will expand the use of wearable technology from everyday health management into the field of medical research. The two companies will jointly develop methods to convert biometric data collected in real-world settings through Galaxy Watch sensors into clinical indicators for evaluating the efficacy and safety of new drugs. They also plan to collaborate extensively throughout the entire clinical research process, from data collection and participant monitoring to trial operations and regulatory compliance. Choi Jong-min, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ MX Business Division Health Development Group, said that clinical research is advancing the understanding of human health by bringing together partners with diverse technological and scientific expertise. They’ve been supporting researchers with tools like the Samsung Health SDK, and through this partnership, it aims to transform everyday data into innovations for drug development and patient care. Hanno Härtlein, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Alcedis, stated that the future of clinical research hinges on the ability to gather meaningful health data beyond traditional clinical settings. The collaboration with Samsung will combine our strengths and scalable infrastructure to accelerate research and drive more patient-centered healthcare innovations. Alcedis, founded in 1992, is a German digital clinical trial specialist with over three decades of experience conducting trials in fields such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology. As a subsidiary of the global healthcare AI company Huma Group, it’s now spearheading the digital transformation of clinical research. Samsung plans to unveil new Galaxy Watch products in the latter half of this year, following last year’s release of the Galaxy Watch 8 series.
