Cristiano Ronaldo (41, Portugal), widely considered one of the world’s greatest soccer players, has seen his sixth International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup campaign end in disappointment.
On Tuesday, Portugal suffered a 0-1 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 North American World Cup at Dallas Stadium in Texas.
After the final whistle, Portugal’s captain Ronaldo, visibly emotional with reddened eyes, lingered on the field. He took a moment to acknowledge the fans before slowly making his way to the locker room, his body language conveying the weight of the loss.
This World Cup was likely Ronaldo’s last. In a pre-match press conference, he expressed his desire to savor the experience: It wants to enjoy this, knowing it’s his final World Cup. But he hopes tomorrow’s game won’t be his last. He’s aiming to go further in the tournament.
The World Cup remains the one major title that has eluded Ronaldo throughout his illustrious career.
His trophy cabinet boasts over 30 titles at the club level, including five UEFA Champions League victories, four FIFA Club World Cup triumphs, and three English Premier League championships.
With the Portuguese national team, he led the squad to victory in the 2016 UEFA European Championship and claimed the UEFA Nations League title twice (2018-19, 2024-25).
However, World Cup glory has remained out of reach. His best finish came in his debut tournament in 2006 in Germany, where Portugal placed fourth.
Since then, Ronaldo and Portugal have faced a series of World Cup disappointments: a Round of 16 exit in 2010 in South Africa, a group stage elimination in Brazil in 2014, another Round of 16 departure in Russia in 2018, and a quarterfinal finish in Qatar in 2022.
Despite past setbacks, Portugal entered this tournament as one of the favorites. Their midfield, featuring talents like Vitinha, João Neves (both from PSG), and Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), was particularly highly regarded.
Determined to make his mark, Ronaldo scored multiple goals in the group stage match against Uzbekistan, cementing his place in history as the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
He followed this up with a crucial penalty in the Round of 32 clash against Croatia, notching his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match and bringing his total World Cup tally to 11.
However, Ronaldo and Portugal’s journey came to an abrupt end in the Round of 16. Despite Ronaldo’s tireless efforts over 90 minutes, which included two shots on target, he couldn’t breach Spain’s flawless defense. Portugal failed to find the back of the net, ultimately falling to their Iberian rivals. In his sixth World Cup appearance, Ronaldo once again faced early elimination, his dream of lifting the coveted trophy remaining unfulfilled.
