The New York Yankees, currently trailing the Tampa Bay Rays (65-46) in the American League East with a 63-49 record, have bolstered their lineup by acquiring Luis Garcia Jr., the National League leader in slugging percentage.
On Monday, the Yankees announced a trade with the Washington Nationals, sending four pitchers in exchange for Garcia.
The Yankees, sitting in second place in their division, have been grappling with a depleted offense due to injuries to key players like Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton.
Garcia, who made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with Washington in 2020, has impressive career stats over 708 games: a .268 batting average (677 hits in 2522 at-bats), 81 home runs, 345 run batted ins (RBIs), 310 runs scored, 53 stolen bases, and a .732 on-base plus slugging (OPS).
This season, Garcia has been on fire, playing in 104 games with a .283 average (101 hits in 357 at-bats), 23 homers, 76 RBIs, 48 runs scored, and an .873 OPS – his best performance since breaking into the big leagues.
Garcia’s .560 slugging percentage currently leads the National League, making him a valuable addition to the Yankees’ lineup.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Garcia’s exceptional hitting ability, expressing satisfaction with the team’s offensive reinforcement.
Garcia is expected to fill in at first base and designated hitter until Stanton returns from injury.
In return, the Nationals received four right-handed pitchers: Yovani Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grieve, and Zach Siebert.
