Actress Kim Yoo Jung (27) is set to make her comeback in the espionage romance drama “100 Days of Deception.” Despite consistently taking on leading roles over the past decade and attempting to transform her image since her breakthrough in “Love in the Moonlight,” that particular series remains her most recognized work. The challenge of surpassing the success of “Love in the Moonlight” from a decade ago still looms large for the actress.
Kim is slated to grace screens in tvN’s new weekend drama “100 Days of Deception,” premiering on October 10. The series weaves a tale of espionage and romance, following a top pickpocket-turned-spy in colonial-era Seoul and an elite interpreter from the Japanese Governor-General’s Office as they face off over 100 days in enemy territory. Kim takes on the role of Lee Ga-kyung, a spy masquerading as an interpreter trainee, opposite Park Jin Young. The project brings together director Yoo In-sik of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” fame and writer Ryu Bo-ri, known for “Do You Like Brahms?”
Kim Yoo Jung’s career began in 2003 as a commercial model, followed by notable child roles in films like The Chaser (2008) and Elegant Lies (2014), as well as the drama “Moon Embracing the Sun” (2012). Her transition to adult roles came with the 2016 hit “Love in the Moonlight,” where she played Hong Ra-on, a woman disguised as a eunuch, alongside Park Bo Gum. The series was a massive success, peaking at 23.3% viewership nationwide (Nielsen Korea). To commemorate its 10th anniversary this year, KBS produced a special variety show, “Love in the Moonlight Again,” reuniting key cast members including Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo Jung.
Following “Love in the Moonlight,” Kim’s leading roles have seen mixed results in terms of ratings. While “Backstreet Rookie” (2020) with Ji Chang Wook peaked at 9.5%, and “Lovers of the Red Sky” (2021) with Ahn Hyo Seop reached 10.4%, other projects struggled. “Clean with Passion for Now” (2018-2019) saw a steep decline from its peak of 3.574% to a series low of 1.583%. More recently, “My Demon” (2023-2024), co-starring Song Kang, underwhelmed with ratings between 2.9% and 4.7%.
Kim has made concerted efforts to shed her youthful image from her child acting days. In “My Demon,” she portrayed a chaebol heiress, while in the TVING series “Dear X,” she took on the role of a top actress with psychopathic tendencies. However, her attempts at more mature and intense characters often highlighted a disconnect between the actress and her roles. The paradox lies in her eagerness for image transformation sometimes leading to unnatural performances. Similarly, her mature styling at award shows and public events often seemed at odds with her inherent aura, creating a jarring impression.
Despite a decade of image reinvention attempts, Kim has struggled to fully shake off her child actor persona, even after tackling strong characters in “My Demon” and “Dear X.” Her filmography, while emphasizing intense roles, has mainly served to contrast with her past image rather than organically showcase her growth and maturity as an actress.
While “Dear X” generated buzz for its dramatic elements, it failed to leave a lasting impression in terms of ratings or acting prowess, leaving Kim’s position as a leading actress somewhat ambiguous. As she prepares to return to period dramas with “100 Days of Deception,” questions linger about whether her recent career choices have truly translated into significant acting achievements.
