In the aftermath of China’s loss to North Korea in the 2026 Asian Games semifinals, Wu Haiyan, captain of the Chinese women’s soccer team, called for patience from critics and urged them to keep faith in the players.
China suffered a 2-0 defeat to North Korea in the women’s soccer semifinals on Tuesday. They conceded an own goal in the 53rd minute and allowed another in the 78th minute.
Japanese sports outlet Gekisaka reported on Wednesday that Wu Haiyan faced a barrage of tough questions from Chinese media about the team’s poor performance immediately following the match.
When asked if the team had planned to aim for a scoreless draw, Wu responded that it wasn’t their intention. It was prepared for a challenging match, regardless of who scored first.
Amid persistent questioning about the team’s losses, Wu stressed that the squad needs time to develop.
It can win or lose, Wu stated. She just hopes people can be a bit more patient. They have many young players, and the veterans are steadily improving. It needs time to build the team chemistry.
Wu then challenged the reporters, asking, does it truly understand the situation they’re facing right now.
Addressing concerns about the team’s second-half slump being due to fitness issues, Wu responded that they’re always criticized for lacking stamina. It’s working to improve. Everyone scrutinizes them during matches, but no one pays attention when they’re not playing.
Wu expressed frustration that Chinese media interest and criticism only peak during matches.
It would be great if you could focus more on the positive aspects of the national team, she added. It’s facing numerous challenges right now. Criticism starts flowing as soon as the results or performance dip.
When reporters claimed their criticism wasn’t aimed at individual players, Wu countered that it’s the players who bear the brunt of the criticism.
Having missed out on the finals, the Chinese women’s team will now face South Korea in the bronze medal match on October 2.
