The South Korean government announced on the 23rd that it deplores North Korea’s execution of a nuclear counterattack simulation targeting U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises. It also accused North Korea of once again violating UN Security Council resolutions and using the exercises as a pretext for nuclear threats.

An official from the Ministry of Unification stated at a meeting with reporters that the U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises are defensive training intended to protect peace from North Korea’s nuclear threats and military provocations.

The official emphasized that the government, in cooperation with relevant ministries, is closely monitoring North Korea’s movements and is prepared for all possibilities of provocation.

The Rodong Sinmun reported yesterday that a comprehensive nuclear counterattack simulation was conducted and directed by Kim Jong Un. It was the first time in this training that a 600mm super-large multiple rocket launcher that was classified by the government as a ballistic missile, was operated within the nuclear trigger system, a comprehensive management system for national nuclear weapons.

North Korea, referring to the U.S.-South Korea Combined Forces Training (KFT) and other joint exercises, stated that this training is “a clear warning signal to the enemies, characterizing the provocative and aggressive nature of the enemies’ military confrontations.”
