North Korea’s newly appointed ambassador to Singapore, Ri Kil Song, has reportedly taken office this week.

On Friday, the country’s state-run media, Rodong Sinmun, reported that “our country’s special envoy presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Singapore on the 27th.”

Ri respectfully delivered a greeting from Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea, to the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Tharman expressed his deep gratitude and asked Ri to convey his greetings to Kim, stating, “I hope that the lives of the flood victims in the northern region of Korea (North Korea) will stabilize as soon as possible.”

According to North Korean media, the new ambassador appears to be a former vice foreign minister who handled Asian affairs until 2020.

North Korea has recently resumed diplomatic activities that had long stalled due to the isolated country’s strict COVID-19 restrictions. In July alone, the government named new ambassadors to Vietnam, Thailand, Romania, and Cuba.
