The Rodong Sinmun, North Korea’s state-run newspaper, reported on August 30 that Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, held a ceremony to honor the families of soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the Russia–Ukraine conflict. This event followed a national commendation ceremony held on August 22.

According to the newspaper’s front-page coverage, Kim hosted a gathering at Mokran Hall to console the families of war heroes who distinguished themselves in overseas military operations.

During the event, Kim pledged to personally care for the bereaved families, announcing that a new residential area in Pyongyang’s Daesong District would be designated as Saebyul Street. He also revealed plans to erect a Comrade Hero Memorial in the nearby arboretum.

Photographs captured an emotional Kim personally presenting portraits of the fallen soldiers to their families and posing for commemorative photos with them.

Kim emphasized that the aspirations of these heroes would be realized, stating that the party and people will undoubtedly build the most powerful and prosperous socialist paradise in honor of the brilliant achievements of these heroes.

Page 3 of the newspaper reported on a second national commendation ceremony for veterans of overseas operations held on August 29, and noted that the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly had adopted laws on farm settlement distribution and consumer protection. On the same day, the 30th anniversary of the 121st Forestry Union Enterprise was also celebrated.

The fourth page highlighted the severity of climate-related disasters, urging complete preparedness for response efforts. Warnings of heavy rain and flooding were issued until Monday for various regions, including South and North Pyongan Provinces, Jagang Province, and parts of Pyongyang, as well as North Hwanghae, Kangwon, and South Hamgyong Provinces. The paper also mentioned the conclusion of the 6th College Students’ Memory Contest at Kim Chaek University of Technology.

The fifth page discussed initiatives to enhance product quality in the light industry sector. The Wonsan Shoe Factory was highlighted for its efforts to incorporate consumer feedback into design processes and to establish more efficient production methods.
