The government announced on Tuesday that a meeting between Kim Nam Jung, Vice Minister of Unification, and Jeong Yeon Du, Director-General of the Foreign Ministry’s Strategic Information Office, will commence this month to discuss North Korean issues.

A Unification Ministry official told reporters that Vice Minister Kim and Director-General Jeong are expected to hold their inaugural meeting within the month.

Last December, following a briefing on the 2026 work plan for President Lee Jae Myung, Unification Minister Jeong Dong Young disclosed that Vice Minister Kim would conduct monthly consultations with Director-General Jeong to share intelligence.

Furthermore, the government revealed plans to establish a consultation channel with the U.S. Embassy in South Korea at the level of the Unification Ministry’s policy director and minister-counselor.

Regarding the matter, a Unification Ministry official said consultations with the U.S. Embassy have not yet been finalized. The official also noted that the proposal to create a Special Envoy for Korean Peninsula Peace, intended to designate the government’s chief representative to North Korea effectively, has been reported to the President and is currently under review.
