North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed a test firing of a new large-caliber multiple rocket launcher system on Tuesday, announcing plans to unveil strategies for bolstering nuclear war deterrence at the upcoming 9th Party Congress.

The state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported on Wednesday that the Missile General Bureau conducted a test to verify the effectiveness of the upgraded large-caliber multiple rocket launcher system under Kim’s supervision.

Key officials, including Kim Jong-sik, First Vice Director of the Party’s Central Committee, and Jang Chang-ha, Director of the Missile General Bureau, accompanied Kim, along with his daughter Ju Ae.

The newspaper stated that four rockets struck a maritime target 358.5 kilometers (about 223 miles) from the launch site.

After observing the test, Kim emphasized its significance in enhancing strategic deterrence, noting that the weapon system had been adapted for specialized offensive use through technological upgrades.

He expressed satisfaction with the system’s improvements, highlighting enhanced mobility, intelligence, and accuracy of the rockets, as well as the upgraded launch vehicle’s performance.

Kim asserted that the test demonstrated the modernity and potential of North Korea’s defense technology, warning that it would pose a serious threat to forces seeking military confrontation.

He reiterated that the ongoing activities aim to further enhance nuclear deterrence capabilities, emphasizing the regime’s focus on strengthening national defense.

Kim stated that establishing reliable offensive capabilities and implementing a deterrence strategy based on them remains a core principle of the Workers’ Party’s defense policy. He indicated that the upcoming 9th Party Congress would announce further steps to bolster the country’s nuclear deterrence.

Released photos showed Ju Ae seated while Kim leaned over to observe the missile launch alongside her.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff had earlier reported that North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea on Tuesday. This coincided with U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Ely Ratner’s Asia tour, interpreted as a show of force against South Korea and the United States.

This launch marked North Korea’s second provocation of the year, occurring 23 days after the previous test on January 4.
