On Thursday, President Lee Jae Myung addressed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, cautioning against political maneuvering that exploits national crises or stokes public anxiety for partisan gain. His remarks were clearly aimed at the political establishment.

During an emergency cabinet meeting at the Blue House that morning, President Lee emphasized that the purpose of politics should always be to enhance citizens’ lives, maintain national stability, and foster growth and development.

These comments are widely interpreted as a rebuke to the People Power Party, which has been critical of the government’s North Korea policy.

Previously, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk had criticized the administration, stating that in light of recent events in Venezuela and Iran, the Lee administration is clearly at an impasse, failing to provide adequate solutions. At a recent March 1 Independence Movement Day event, President Lee offered only misguided approaches based on the flawed notion of respecting the North Korean regime.

In response, President Lee stressed that effective management of the Korean Peninsula’s security situation is crucial for South Korea’s sustained growth and development. He rhetorically asked about isn’t true security about creating a peaceful system that negates the need for conflict, rather than provoking adversaries and winning through confrontation?

Lee continued that some are making bizarre claims like, this time, North Korea is the target. What benefit could possibly come from destabilizing peace and security on the Korean Peninsula? He urged his cabinet that he hopes each ministry will proactively manage the situation to ensure the citizens feel secure and to maintain stability in the geopolitical and security landscape of the Korean Peninsula.
