North Korea has expressed optimism for the conclusion of Myanmar’s political transition and the establishment of stability following the country’s recent general elections and presidential inauguration.
A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that Myanmar has ended its five-year political transition and entered a new phase of national and social development with the completion of general elections and the official inauguration of a constitutionally elected president, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
The spokesperson added that it respects the Myanmar people’s aspirations and choices in achieving robust socio-political stability and creating an environment for peaceful and sustainable development.
They further expressed hope that the new developments in Myanmar would lead to socio-political stability, economic growth, and contribute to regional peace and stability.
Myanmar recently saw the emergence of a new government. Min Aung Hlaing, the former military junta leader, was elected president on April 3 through a joint vote of the upper and lower houses of parliament. He was officially inaugurated on April 10 at the federal parliament in the capital, Naypyidaw. The same day, a cabinet list including 30 ministers was announced, symbolically marking the transition to a civilian government system.
This announcement not only hints at potential solidarity among nations facing Western sanctions but also reflects North Korea’s efforts to diversify its diplomatic relations. Following its closer alignment with Russia, Pyongyang appears to be seeking to broaden its cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) allies, including Myanmar.
