The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced plans to proceed with the Korea-U.S.-Japan multi-domain joint maritime exercise, Freedom Edge, as scheduled. They emphasized its role as a defensive exercise aimed at maintaining regional stability, despite North Korea’s opposition.
During a regular press briefing at the Ministry of National Defense on Tuesday, Navy Colonel Jang Do-young, head of the Public Affairs Office for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, addressed concerns about potential U.S. training reductions in response to North Korean objections. He stated that this is an annual defensive exercise conducted by the three nations to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and preserve peace and stability in the region. As of now, there are no changes to the plans.
On Monday, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency, asserting that the U.S. nuclear posture has grown more aggressive, and Japan’s rearmament and South Korea’s military expansion within the U.S.-Japan-Korea trilateral military alliance have created an unstable security environment in the region. The statement added that the policy towards the U.S. will remain unwaveringly tough in response to its persistent hostile policies.
The Freedom Edge exercise is scheduled to take place from September 7 to 11 in waters southeast of Jeju Island. This trilateral drill follows an agreement made during the 2023 summit between the three countries to conduct multi-domain exercises, with three joint exercises held since 2024.
Last year’s exercises included a range of drills such as maritime missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, aerial operations, air defense, counter-piracy, and cyber defense training. Notably, it marked the first time since the inception of these trilateral exercises that a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier did not participate, sparking speculation about the reasons behind its absence.
Military analysts suggest that the recent deployment of U.S. aircraft carriers to the Middle East, following February’s U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, may impact their availability for this year’s exercises.
When questioned about the potential participation of a U.S. aircraft carrier, Colonel Jang responded that he understands that the U.S. is currently reviewing this matter.
