The U.S. military is evaluating plans to move surveillance equipment closer to the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in response to North Korea’s ongoing border line work north of the MDL, which aims to sever inter-Korean ties, and frequent MDL violations.

Military sources revealed on Thursday that plans are under consideration to install and relocate surveillance assets, including Thermal Observation Devices (TOD), to locations nearer to the MDL than current positions.

During a routine press briefing at the Ministry of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Maj. Gen. Jang Do-young addressed inquiries about potential countermeasures, including additional deployment of surveillance and reconnaissance assets, in response to North Korean MDL incursions. He stated that it’s maintaining a robust military readiness posture while closely monitoring North Korean activities, including MDL violations. The forces are implementing standard operational procedures and continuously enhancing the capabilities.

Since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un characterized inter-Korean relations as two hostile states in December 2023, Pyongyang has been constructing fences, minefields, and tactical roads along the MDL since April 2024. This process has led to frequent MDL violations. Defense officials project that this border fortification project will be completed around 2028.

In mid-August, U.S. and South Korean forces fired warning shots for the first time this year in response to North Korean troops crossing the MDL. The North Korean personnel retreated northward after the warning shots, with no further unusual activity reported.

On August 29 and 30, North Korean forces again violated the MDL along both western and eastern fronts, prompting allied forces to fire warning shots in accordance with established protocols.

Military officials are expected to engage in discussions with the United Nations (UN) Command regarding the forward deployment of surveillance equipment. Any additional placement or relocation of surveillance assets within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) requires coordination with the UN Command.
