The Air Force announced on Tuesday that it will participate in the Operation Christmas Drop, delivering gifts to residents of Micronesia from December 7 to 14.
This humanitarian mission, spearheaded by U.S. Pacific Air Forces, traces its roots back to 1952. It began when the U.S. Air Force airdropped essential supplies to islanders in Micronesia, south of Guam, where no airstrips existed. Since then, the U.S. Air Force has faithfully conducted this operation every December.
The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) first joined the operation in 2021 at the invitation of the U.S. Air Force and has been a consistent participant ever since.
This year’s multinational effort includes forces from South Korea, the U.S., Canada, and Japan. ROKAF will deploy one C-130 transport aircraft from the 5th Air Mobility Wing, along with a crew of over 30 personnel, including pilots, maintenance technicians, and support staff. The team is scheduled to depart from Gimhae Air Base and arrive at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, which will serve as the operational hub for the mission.
Between December 7 and 14, the joint task force plans to conduct five separate airdrops, delivering vital supplies such as medicine, clothing, and other essentials to more than ten islands across Micronesia. The relief packages will be attached to parachutes and dropped from low altitudes to ensure accurate delivery.
This operation not only provides humanitarian aid but also serves as a valuable opportunity for participating nations to exchange aviation expertise, build trust, and enhance their joint operational capabilities. The ROKAF contingent is set to return to South Korea on December 16 upon completion of their mission.
Major Han Yoon-hee, operations team leader from the 251st Airborne Squadron, stated that it’s a privilege to represent South Korea in this humanitarian mission, bringing critical supplies directly to isolated island communities during the holiday season. He added that they’re committed to executing this operation with the utmost safety and precision, showcasing South Korea’s dedication to global citizenship and further elevating the reputation of the Air Force on the international stage.
