Infineon Technologies, the world’s leading automotive semiconductor company, has joined forces with LG Electronics to accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

On Thursday, Infineon announced a collaboration with LG Electronics to develop safety and security solutions for cross-domain controller (xDC) platforms, zone controllers, and high-performance computing (HPC) platforms.

The partnership will first focus on developing an xDC platform based on Infineon’s AURIX™ microcontroller.

This platform will integrate and optimize data across various vehicle systems, including infotainment, autonomous driving (AD)/advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and vehicle motion control (VMO), and provide optimized data routing to enhance vehicle performance and safety significantly.

The companies also plan to develop a cost-effective and scalable zone controller using Infineon’s TRAVEO™ T2G microcontroller.

Zone controllers manage specific physical areas within the vehicle, supporting the integration of sensors, actuators, and peripheral devices. They perform multiple functions, including local gateway operations via Ethernet backbone, acting as a cross-domain data hub, supporting service-oriented architecture (SOA), and enabling smart power distribution (SPD) and protection features.

Zone controllers are a key technology in the SDV era. They work in conjunction with HPC platforms to enable intelligent vehicle architectures. The jointly developed HPC platform will incorporate Infineon’s AURIX™ microcontroller to enhance SDV safety and security.

Infineon’s high-performance AURIX TC4Dx vehicle microcontroller boasts an advanced multi-core architecture featuring six cores and a new 500 megahertz (MHz) TriCore™.

All cores are equipped with lockstep capabilities for optimal functional safety. The microcontroller’s parallel processing unit (PPU) also provides a platform for developing embedded AI-based applications such as motor control, battery management systems, and vehicle motion control.

Infineon expressed that this collaboration aims to develop core SDV technologies, elevating vehicle safety, efficiency, and intelligence. The company believes combining LG Electronics’ automotive expertise with Infineon’s semiconductor technology will create a solid foundation for implementing advanced SDV platforms.
