Apple is set to integrate its previously fragmented gaming services at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 25, scheduled for June 9.

According to major tech news outlets, Apple plans to unveil a unified gaming application that will combine gaming services across the iPhone operating system (iOS), iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS platforms.

This new app is expected to consolidate Apple’s gaming-related services, which have been scattered across subscription offerings like Apple Arcade (6.99 USD monthly) and the social gaming platform Game Center.

The consolidation of platforms is viewed as a strategic move to bolster Apple’s gaming business, which has recently shown signs of underperformance.

In Apple’s Q1 financial results, services revenue hit 26.3 billion USD, accounting for over 20% of the company’s total revenue (124.3 billion USD). However, Apple Arcade has reportedly underperformed compared to other services.

Apple Arcade’s struggle to attract subscribers, compared to other gaming subscription services, is primarily attributed to its focus on casual games.

Reports from last year suggested that Apple had reduced payments to game developers supplying content for Apple Arcade, leading to a decline in new game additions to the platform.

Apple Strengthens Gaming Strategy with First Game Studio Acquisition

Coinciding with the news of the unified gaming app, Apple announced its acquisition of RAC7, a Canadian indie game studio known for developing Sneaky Sasquatch.

This marks Apple’s first-ever acquisition of a game developer, potentially signaling a series of future acquisitions to enhance Apple Arcade.

The new unified gaming app is also expected to address Apple’s shortcomings in the gaming platform arena.

Leaked information since last year indicates that Apple has been exploring ways to integrate FaceTime and iMessage within the unified gaming app.

Tom’s Guide reported that rumors of Apple releasing an app to rival Microsoft’s Xbox app have been circulating since last year. While the unified gaming app will be unveiled at WWDC 25, its official launch is anticipated to coincide with the release of iOS 19 in September.
