Samsung SDI’s Cylindrical Battery Powers World-Record-Breaking EV Range

Samsung SDI announced on Thursday that a battery electric vehicle (BEV) equipped with its cylindrical batteries has been recognized by Guinness World Records for achieving the longest driving range in the world.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring (GT), a full-size electric sedan from U.S. electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid Motors, covered an impressive 1,205 km (about 749 miles) on a single charge during a test drive between St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany.

Navigating through various terrains, including highways, mountain roads, and urban streets, the vehicle surpassed the previous record by 160 km (about 99 miles) without requiring any additional charging, setting a new global benchmark.

Launched last year as a long-range specialist, the Lucid Air GT showcases Samsung SDI’s battery technology, featuring cutting-edge performance metrics including a 0-100 km/h (about 0-60 mph) acceleration time of just 3 seconds, 831 horsepower, a top speed of 270 km/h (about 168 mph), and rapid charging capabilities that add 400 km (about 248 miles) of range in only 16 minutes.

The record-breaking EV is equipped with 6,600 of Samsung SDI’s 21700 cylindrical batteries, totaling a capacity of 117 kWh. Samsung SDI reports that these cells employ a high-nickel NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) cathode along with a silicon-based anode, delivering superior energy density, longevity, and fast-charging performance.

Established in 2007, Lucid Motors has positioned itself as a leader in high-performance EV technology, particularly in powertrain innovation. The company’s strategic partnership with Samsung SDI, formed in 2016, has resulted in the development of premium models such as the Lucid Air Dream Edition, which also incorporates Samsung SDI’s cylindrical batteries.

A Samsung SDI representative stated that powering the world’s longest-range EV with its cylindrical batteries demonstrates our industry-leading technology. Further noting that it remains committed to strengthening its partnership with Lucid Motors to expand its global market presence and accelerate the development of high-performance, safe battery solutions.
