South Korean artificial intelligence (AI) models are making waves across various sectors, from cancer treatment planning to semiconductor design and naval defense.

The Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) unveiled four case studies on Monday, showcasing the practical applications of K-AI models in industry.

This revelation is part of a 10-week initiative launched on May 11 to highlight the versatility of homegrown AI models, aiming to bolster the nation’s AI ecosystem.

LG AI Research is partnering with Vanderbilt University Medical Center to develop an Oncologic Agent AI using LG’s large language model, ExaOne. This AI will streamline cancer care, from tissue analysis to treatment planning.

The system employs a multi-agent collaborative structure, with each AI agent tackling specific tasks such as analyzing cancer tissue images, identifying gene activity, evaluating drug responses, designing treatment strategies, and supporting medical decisions.

In the shipbuilding sector, NC AI and Hanwha Ocean are revolutionizing welding processes. Their autonomous welding system, powered by physical AI, aims to replace the traditional reliance on skilled workers and ensure consistent, high-quality results.

SK Telecom is collaborating with the Ministry of National Defense to create a specialized AI model for defense applications. This initiative, leveraging SK Telecom’s proprietary AI foundation model, is set to be a catalyst for defense AI transformation (AX).

Motif Technologies is joining forces with South Korean semiconductor firm Padu to integrate AI into chip design. Their proprietary AI model will be applied across the entire semiconductor development cycle, from circuit design to power efficiency optimization, with plans for real-world implementation.

Concurrently, the Ministry of Science and ICT is spearheading the Proprietary AI Foundation Model (PAM) project to develop a national AI champion. This initiative, part of the Lee Jae Myung administration’s agenda, aims to reduce reliance on foreign AI and secure technological sovereignty. LG AI Research, SK Telecom, Upstage, and Motif Technologies are currently vying for the top spot, with the next evaluation round slated for early August.
