President Lee Jae Myung addressed concerns on Tuesday regarding the U.S. military’s transfer of air defense weapons to the Middle East. He stated that if asked whether this significantly impairs the deterrence strategy against North Korea, he can confidently say it does not.

During the 9th Cabinet meeting at the Blue House that morning, Lee commented that there seems to be some controversy surrounding the recent overseas transfer of certain air defense assets by U.S. Forces Korea, including the Ford.

The President elaborated that from the government’s standpoint, it expects and believes that the U.S. military’s presence has consistently contributed to the safety and peace of the Korean Peninsula. However, it must acknowledge that while it may express opposition to the U.S. military’s transfer of some air defense weapons based on their operational needs, it cannot always dictate these decisions.

Lee emphasized that objectively, South Korea’s defense spending is among the highest globally. The annual defense budget is reportedly 1.4 times North Korea’s entire Gross National Product, indicating the robust self-defense capabilities.

He continued that international organizations rank the military strength fifth worldwide, showcasing South Korea’s formidable defense capabilities. When objectively compared to North Korea, there’s a substantial gap in the favor. While North Korea’s nuclear factor is a unique consideration, the conventional combat and overall military capabilities are undeniably superior.

The President stressed that national defense is ultimately a sovereign responsibility. Relying solely on others can be precarious if that support falters. It must always prepare for worst-case scenarios. This principle applies to the defense and military expenditures. Just as it routinely prepares for unlikely conflicts, it must be ready for situations where external support might be compromised due to shifts in the international order.

Lee concluded that it must ensure the self-reliant defense capabilities remain robust in all circumstances. Considering the level of defense spending, the advanced state of the defense industry, the global military strength ranking, and the exceptional morale and dedication of the troops, there’s no cause for alarm regarding the national defense. It’s the duty to maintain and further strengthen this position.
