Google Gemini’s New Memory Import Feature Allows Seamless Transfer of AI Data

Google has added a new feature to Gemini that lets users import personal data stored in other AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Claude.

The “Import Memory” feature, available to both free and paid users, allows Gemini to pull in summarized personal information from external AI tools without requiring users to manually re-enter their preferences and settings.

The transferred data can include demographic details such as name, occupation, education, and location, as well as interests, key plans, personal preferences, and response rules — giving Gemini immediate context that would otherwise need to be rebuilt from scratch.

The process is straightforward. Users navigate to the Import Memory option in Gemini’s settings, where the platform generates a prompt. That prompt is copied and pasted into the external AI to retrieve a condensed summary of stored data. Users then paste the results back into Gemini and select “Add Memory” to complete the transfer.

The feature is designed to benefit users who regularly switch between AI assistants, allowing them to consolidate context and preferences into a single platform.

Testing the feature with ChatGPT produced strong results. The platform accurately identified the user’s name and location using account details and system metadata, and correctly inferred profession based on past inquiries and a previously submitted self-introduction.

ChatGPT also flagged a pattern of image transformation requests — particularly in the style of Studio Ghibli — along with interests in fortune-telling and social issues drawn from search history. Visual data such as images and videos could not be transferred.

Google also introduced a companion feature called Import Chat History, which goes further by transferring full conversation logs rather than summarized data. The process can take up to 24 hours depending on the volume of records and the platform involved.

For users who prefer a clean experience, Gemini offers a Temporary Chat mode that disables all imported external data, allowing the AI to respond without referencing any previously transferred information.

Google’s latest update appears designed to reduce friction for users migrating from competing AI platforms, a move that reflects the growing trend of consumers using multiple AI assistants at once.

A four-week consumer trends survey conducted by ConsumerInsight starting in January found that 65% of current Gemini users originally started with ChatGPT, suggesting that two-thirds of Gemini’s base consists of users who switched from OpenAI’s platform.

Anthropic’s Claude is also seeing rapid growth. Monthly active users surged from 160,000 in January to over 270,000 the following month. Claude recently introduced a memory import feature similar to Gemini’s.

“The most effective AI assistant is one that understands user preferences and past interactions,” said Maryam Sanglaji, product manager for the Google Gemini app group. “We’ve introduced a user-friendly transition tool across all Gemini accounts, simplifying the process of importing memories, context, and chat histories from other AI applications into Gemini.”
