South Korea’s main opposition party marked West Sea Defense Day on March 27 with a pledge to improve benefits for veterans and a sharp rebuke of the current administration’s North Korea policy.

A party floor leader criticized the administration’s security decisions, arguing that directing frontline troops to use non-lethal equipment and scaling back joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises is emboldening Pyongyang. He specifically targeted the Unification Minister for announcing South Korea’s decision not to co-sponsor the UN resolution on North Korean human rights, demanding the minister’s immediate dismissal.

He warned that continued defense of the current policy would expose the administration’s moderate conservative branding as a public deception.

The party’s chief spokesperson added that the country’s freedom was built on the sacrifices of those who defended the West Sea, pledging full legislative and budgetary support to honor veterans’ families and strengthen respect for military service members.
