The ramen industry in South Korea has recently recruited several high-profile executives from Samsung and LG, companies renowned for their extensive global business experience. This move comes as the demand for K-Ramen surges worldwide, signaling a strategic effort to bolster capabilities in managing international subsidiaries and supply chains.

Industry sources revealed on August 23 that Nongshim has brought on board Lee Tae-jin as the executive director of its overseas business management team. Lee brings a wealth of international market expertise, having worked with LG Electronics in the U.S. and Indonesia.

Nongshim is aggressively expanding its global footprint beyond its established markets in the U.S. and China, now setting its sights on Europe and Southeast Asia. Lee’s extensive experience in leading overseas sales subsidiaries is seen as a key asset in driving this ambitious international expansion.

In a similar vein, Samyang Foods appointed Park Ji-wan as the executive director of global supply chain management in April. Park’s impressive resume includes nearly a decade at Samsung Electronics, where he handled various roles including sales, supply chain management, logistics planning, and project management, followed by 16 years in SCM-related positions at LG Electronics.

As Samyang Foods experiences rapid growth in international sales, driven by its popular Spicy Chicken Ramen, the company’s need for robust global supply chain management has intensified. Park’s recruitment is viewed as a strategic move to enhance the firm’s global supply chain infrastructure in response to soaring overseas demand.

Earlier, in November 2023, Ottogi tapped Kim Kyung-ho, a former LG Electronics vice president, to head its global business division. Kim’s extensive international business acumen includes stints as the head of Accenture’s Taiwan office and the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of LG Electronics’ information strategy team, as well as overseeing European operations. Notably, he is also the father-in-law of Kim Jae-woo, who currently leads Ottogi’s U.S. subsidiary.

Samsung and LG Veterans with Global Operations Expertise Seen as Ideal Leaders for K-Ramen’s Global Expansion
The ramen industry’s aggressive pursuit of Samsung and LG talent is fueled by the rapid growth of their international business, riding the wave of the K-food phenomenon. With limited growth prospects in the domestic market, these companies are leveraging experienced professionals to establish a strong presence in new markets where Korean ramen is gaining popularity.

The evolving nature of international business has heightened the demand for specialized talent. While the focus was once primarily on exporting domestically produced goods, companies now need to establish local subsidiaries and manage complex operations, from country-specific sales strategies to logistics and supply chain management.

This shift has put a spotlight on professionals with global business experience from Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Both conglomerates have extensive networks of international production and sales subsidiaries, resulting in a deep pool of talent with hands-on experience in local sales, subsidiary management, production, and supply chain operations.

For food companies that have traditionally focused on domestic growth, tapping into this expertise can significantly reduce the learning curve in international expansion and accelerate growth. These seasoned professionals can swiftly develop market-specific strategies and efficiently manage local organizations and supply chains, providing a competitive edge in new markets.

An industry insider noted that as food companies rapidly scale up their global operations, they’re investing heavily in acquiring top-tier talent. It anticipates continued efforts to recruit professionals with extensive global business experience from major corporations to quickly enhance their international business capabilities.
