The Golden Black Boss watermelon from Jincheon in North Chungcheong Province, famous for its black exterior and yellow interior, has begun shipping and is targeting summer consumers.

According to Jincheon County on the 21st, the shipment of Golden Black Boss watermelons, cultivated primarily in Jincheon-eup as an income crop for farms, has officially commenced. This watermelon is oval-shaped, weighing approximately 6.6 to 8.8 lbs. Its rind is dark green, and the flesh is similar to a yellow mango, hence why it’s also known as the Black Mango watermelon.

Not only does it have a crunchy texture, but its sugar content is also over 13 Brix, higher than that of regular watermelons, making it sold at a relatively high price and highly sought after by many customers.

In 2022, trial cultivation started at two farms. Currently, cultivation covers an area of about 6.9 acres across four farms. This year, it is expected to generate a farm income of around $255,000. A Jincheon County official said, “The cultivation of unique watermelon varieties is becoming a new source of income for local farms,” adding, “We plan to gradually expand the cultivation area.”

Jincheon County previously embarked on creating watermelon complexes tailored to the characteristics of each town and village, establishing the Apple Watermelon Complex (Chopyeong-myeon), Black Boss Watermelon Complex (Jincheon-eup), and Saeja Watermelon Complex (Deoksan-eup).
