EtcWhy Did an Aussie Surfer Pull His Rising Sun Flag Surfboard? Inside the Heated International Dispute

The news recently emerged that an Australian surfing athlete opted not to use a surfboard adorned with the Rising Sun Flag design at the Paris Olympics.

Higashi Sports Web published an article yesterday titled “Australian Star Athlete Withdraws Use of Rising Sun Surfboard Amid South Korean Protests.”

The article highlighted that the behind-the-scenes controversy surrounding the Rising Sun Surfboard seems set to capture significant attention.

According to reports, Australian surfer Jack Robinson posted a photo of a surfboard featuring the Rising Sun Flag pattern on his social media account with the caption, “2 days to go. Boards inspired by AI.”

Here, AI refers to the initials of the legendary surfer Andy Iron, who passed away in 2010. Andy was known for using surfboards adorned with the Rising Sun design during his lifetime.

In response, South Korean team coach Song Min conveyed this information to the Korean Sports Council, which then formally protested to the Australian Olympic Committee. They subsequently received confirmation that the Rising Sun surfboard would not be used.

Professor Seo Kyung Deok from Sungshin Women’s University commented, “The controversy surrounding the Rising Sun Flag also emerged during the Tokyo Olympics, sparking significant debate. The proactive measures taken before the start of the Olympic events this time carry profound significance.”

Meanwhile, Seo has actively advocated for removing the Rising Sun Flag from international sporting events by emailing the International Olympic Committee (IOC), requesting, “Please prevent the Rising Sun Flag from being displayed” ahead of the Olympics.
