A Chinese man in his 60s has been fined for illegally filming a flight attendant on a flight to Jeju Island.

According to legal sources, on Monday, Judge Bae Gu Min of the Jeju District Court’s Criminal Division 2 sentenced the man to a fine of 5 million won (approximately $3,500) for violating South Korea’s Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes, specifically for using a camera to record the flight attendant. He was indicted without detention on the charges.

The incident occurred on September 9, 2024, around 1 p.m., when the man boarded a domestic flight from Beijing to Jeju. He is accused of using his mobile phone to film the flight attendant’s body several times during the flight.

In court, the man fully admitted to the charges against him.

During the investigation, he reportedly stated that he filmed the attendant because he found her attractive.

His defense attorney argued, “The defendant deeply regrets his actions. This was his first overseas trip, and he acted impulsively due to the excitement of the experience.”

The defendant himself expressed remorse, stating, “I took the pictures out of curiosity, and I sincerely apologize for violating South Korean law. I also apologize to the victim and the airline.”
