Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, has rebuffed demands from European Union (EU) countries to censor political content on the platform.

According to Cointelegraph, Durov firmly rejected a request from a Western European nation to block conservative voices on Telegram ahead of the Romanian presidential election.

He asserted that democracy should not be undermined under the guise of protecting it and urged not to fall into the paradox of interfering with elections while claiming to prevent election intervention. Durov staunchly defends freedom of expression through Telegram and remains committed to safeguarding individual autonomy and privacy.

Durov garnered global attention following his arrest in France last August. The incident sparked outrage among cryptocurrency enthusiasts and free speech advocates, who decried it as political persecution. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron insisted that politics played no role and that the French government supported freedom of expression. However, Matt Murtagh, CEO of Helios Labs, criticized the situation, asking if it’s truly an act in defense of liberty to attempt to sentence a founder who refused censorship to 20 years in prison.

In the wake of Durov’s arrest, Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble, a video platform supporting free speech, announced his departure from the EU to evade pressure from the French government. He vehemently condemned the French authorities’ arrest of the Telegram founder as a blatant attempt to impose censorship.
