NorthKoreaEx-South Korean President Denies Role in Drone Crisis, Says He Wasn’t Briefed

A special investigation team, led by Special Prosecutor Cho Eun Seok, is investigating the sedition and treason incidents related to the 2024 South Korean martial law crisis. The investigation team questioned former President Yoon Suk-yeol about the allegations involving the North Korean unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Yoon reportedly stated that he was not briefed on the matter.

On Tuesday, Yoon’s legal team released a statement in response to the special investigation team’s inquiry. When asked if he sent UAVs anticipating North Korea’s retaliation, Yoon consistently stated that he was not briefed on sending UAVs because it was not required.

This statement refutes media reports claiming that when the special investigation team probed potential prior collusion with North Korea, Yoon reacted negatively, suggesting he might refuse to answer questions. Yoon’s team categorically denied these allegations, asserting that such exchanges never occurred during any previous investigations.

The sedition investigation team suspects that Yoon may have fabricated a pretext for emergency martial law by escalating the risk of military confrontation between North and South Korea, thereby creating a perceived threat to national security.

On the same day, the investigation team continued its search and seizure operations for a second consecutive day, dispatching investigators to military-related sites, including the Drone Operations Command. On Monday, the team conducted searches at 24 military-related locations, including the Drone Operations Command, the Ministry of Defense, the National Security Office, and the residence of Kim Yong Dae, the commander of the Drone Operations Command.
