On September 26, the U.S. State Department announced that Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun during a high-level event at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. The meeting reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea’s denuclearization.

State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated in a press release that both sides reaffirmed their resolve to promote the enduring spirit of the U.S.-South Korea alliance and advance a forward-looking agenda during this meeting.

Pigott continued that they acknowledged the success of the trilateral diplomatic meeting held on September 22, which focused on peace, security, and prosperity in the Korean Peninsula and the Indo-Pacific region. Further noting that the two countries especially reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea’s complete denuclearization.

The spokesperson added that Deputy Secretary Landau emphasized the crucial role of South Korean investments in contributing to U.S. reindustrialization and shared prosperity, highlighting the investments announced during the U.S.-South Korea summit on August 25. Both sides welcomed plans to establish a bilateral working group to promote visits and investments in the U.S.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of achieving meaningful outcomes at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which South Korea will host in Gyeongju.

It is worth noting that President Donald Trump previously announced an agreement to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC meeting in Gyeongju, scheduled for October 31 to November 1.
