North Korean troops have once again breached the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) while operating in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Pyongyang has remained silent for four consecutive days regarding Seoul’s proposal for inter-Korean military talks to establish clear MDL guidelines.

Military sources reported on Thursday that North Korean soldiers crossed the MDL into South Korean territory during operations near the DMZ the day before. South Korean forces responded with warning broadcasts and warning shots, prompting the North Korean troops to retreat.

A spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said South Korea followed standard operating procedures in response to the violation of the armistice agreement inside the DMZ.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense proposed inter-Korean military talks on November 17 to address the recent surge in MDL crossings by North Korean forces. This marks the first call for military dialogue since President Lee Jae Myung took office. If the talks materialize, it would be the first such meeting in nearly seven years, following the 10th general-level military talks held in October 2018.
