On Monday, Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young emphasized the need for patience in North Korea policy, stating that the sense of confrontation and hostility between North and South Korea cannot be eliminated overnight.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Chungcheong Unification Plus Center, Minister Chung’s remarks were delivered by the Unification Policy Office Director. He stated that since taking office, the Lee Jae Myung administration has consistently worked towards peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, striving to reduce tensions and build trust between North and South Korea.

He continued that to break down the high walls of hostility and reestablish severed lines of communication, it needs sustained and patient efforts.

Minister Chung added that the unified voice of the American people for peace is paramount, and called on the Chungcheong Unification Plus Center to play a crucial role in this endeavor.

The Chungcheong Unification Plus Center, established in April 2021, serves as a hub for collaboration among the federal government, local authorities, and the private sector. It provides various unification-related services, including education, expanded cooperation, support for North Korean defectors, and consultation on inter-Korean exchanges.

There are five such centers across the country, located in Incheon, Honam, Gangwon, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong, with the Chungcheong center receiving the largest budget allocation.

Minister Chung stated that it will provide region-specific unification services to the people of Chungcheong and create a hub for fostering peaceful unification through various cultural events and educational programs. He added that furthermore, it will serve as a unification community center that closely assists North Korean defectors in achieving self-sufficiency and facilitates communication and interaction among local residents.
