On Thursday, Alex Wong, former Deputy National Security Advisor who managed U.S.-North Korea dialogue during Donald Trump’s first administration, stated that President Trump could create a favorable environment for talks with North Korea by altering conditions in the short term, even as soon as next year.
Speaking to reporters at the 21st Jeju Forum held at the Haevichi Hotel in Seogwipo, Jeju, Wong emphasized that to influence North Korea, both international pressure and dialogue are crucial.
He acknowledged that while the current geopolitical climate may pose challenges for dialogue with North Korea, if President Trump, known for his unconventional approach, collaborates with a strong South Korean leader (President Lee Jae Myung), several possibilities could emerge.
Wong added that as is well known, communication between U.S. and North Korean leaders during Trump’s first term was quite positive. President Trump maintains a keen interest in Chairman Kim Jong Un and North Korea. If conditions align, this could lead to re-engagement with North Korea.
Addressing growing skepticism about the goal of North Korea’s denuclearization in the U.S. and internationally, Wong stated that he’s aware of discussions about abandoning the denuclearization goal. However, any new approach to North Korea must ultimately aim for denuclearization.
He predicted that the top-down approach, similar to that used during Trump’s first term, would remain effective for resuming U.S.-North Korea dialogue. Wong remarked that the strategy employed by the U.S. and South Korea during that time was prudent and worth revisiting. It remains a novel and unconventional approach.
Wong, currently serving as the Global Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Hanwha Group, assessed that discussions on the construction and development of nuclear-powered submarines between the U.S. and South Korea would significantly benefit U.S. national interests.
He stated that South Korea already possesses world-class diesel-electric submarines. Incorporating a wider operational range and superior stealth capabilities would enhance security in Northeast Asia. If the U.S. and its allies can reduce their burdens in the Northeast Asian region, it will ultimately benefit the U.S.
