Disney and Universal have launched a class-action lawsuit against Midjourney, an AI image generation company, alleging copyright infringement.

CNBC reported on Wednesday that Disney and Universal claim Midjourney has illegally created and distributed popular characters from movies and animated series, including Star Wars, The Simpsons, and Minions. This unprecedented legal action by Hollywood studios against an AI firm signals a significant escalation in the ongoing tension between artificial intelligence and the content industry.

The entertainment giants argue that Midjourney has unlawfully replicated their iconic characters and persisted in copyright infringement despite cease-and-desist requests. Both studios are pushing for a jury trial, emphasizing that Midjourney’s actions pose a fundamental threat to the foundations of U.S. copyright law.

In their legal filing, Disney and Universal strongly criticized the company, characterizing it as a typical copyright freeloader and a breeding ground for endless plagiarism, and described the company’s actions as deliberate and calculated.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, this lawsuit is poised to establish a crucial legal precedent on how AI technology will reshape the copyright landscape within the content industry.
