Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension: What This Means for Portugal’s National Team

LifestyleCristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension: What This Means for Portugal's National Team

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo (41, Al Nassr), who left the national team camp during a recent call-up. Ronaldo departed following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus over playing time, but has since acknowledged his actions and expressed willingness to accept any consequences.

On October 10, the FPF released a statement announcing the start of disciplinary measures against Ronaldo. The federation has classified this as an urgent matter, and Ronaldo will be temporarily suspended from participation until a final decision is reached.

Portuguese media reports suggest that players who miss team training, matches, or related activities may face suspensions ranging from 1 to 6 months, as per federation regulations. The final disciplinary action will be determined after further review.

Ronaldo warmed up to enter as a substitute during the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Nations League match against Norway on September 27 but was ultimately not used. He then left the national team camp after learning he wouldn’t start in the October 1 game against Denmark.

On October 7, Ronaldo took to social media to explain his position, alleging that Coach Jesus had broken promises regarding his playing time. He claimed Jesus failed to honor a commitment to bring him on during the Norway match and didn’t mention previously agreed-upon details in a pre-Denmark game press conference.

Coach Jesus sidestepped Ronaldo’s claims, simply stating he would continue his work with the national team.

Ronaldo also accepted responsibility for leaving the team. He apologized to Portuguese fans and citizens, stating he would accept the federation’s decision. However, he made it clear that he has no plans to retire from international duty and intends to continue playing for Portugal after serving any suspension.

In Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal has won four consecutive matches in the Nations League group stage, led by Gonçalo Ramos (AC Milan), who scored in three straight games.

Portugal is set to host Denmark on November 14 and travel to Wales on November 17 for their final two Nations League group stage matches.
